JANET PULLEN
about Janet
I continue to be inspired by how much more there is to discover in the application of the three components - needle, thread and fabric - as the creative medium for expressing ideas.
Influences have mostly been from the visual experience: works by some 20th century abstract artists attract me. I like to piece and patch fabric in an informal way; the joins form lines which can represent boundaries separating one area from another. They often form geometric shapes: lines, shapes and their relationship to each other are important. Stitching may be applied not only for joining fabrics, but to characterise a boundary, for mark making and to create concentrated areas of interest.
I see patterns and shapes in the environment as inspirational sources. Additionally I am mindful of the value of working with a range of materials; how textiles can support a narrative; and the emotional aspects involved in the stitching process itself.
